Well, ignoring the now only mildly grating fact that such a cheerful musical number including a line about how women as a group were stupid would never be considered acceptable (don’t actually have a problem with this song itself, just double standards annoy me), I never actually realised when I was younger what a subtle and subversive dig at feminism this whole scene was. Like, she gets them both up in arms, singing about how they’re going to not be afraid and will stand up for their rights and cast off the ‘shackles of yesterday’ (yeah I know all the words… so?) and then she hears that her husband is coming home and she rushes to hide the banners and sashes because she knows he disapproves? I can’t help but find it amusing….

…Do you know that feeling where you realised that there are so many things in movies that you just never picked up as a child?

I never realised she was singing about the suffragette movement. WHOOPS.

The last time I actually watched Mary Poppins I think I was like 6-years-old or something. Either way, LDs (Laser Discs) were still a thing, because my parents just didn’t buy a DVD version and we never watched it again. Just about what I remember about the movie is liking Chim-Chim-Cher-ee and Dick van Dyke. Women’s rights was not something that my 6-year-old self cared about, I guess.

Ogoh-ogoh are statues built for the Ngrupuk parade, which takes place on the eve of Nyepi day in Bali, Indonesia. Ogoh-ogoh normally have form of mythological beings, mostly demons. As with many creative endeavours based on Balinese Hinduism, the creation of Ogoh-ogoh represents spiritual aims inspired by Hindu philosophy.

The main purpose of the making of Ogoh-ogoh is the purification of the natural environment of any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activities of living beings (especially humans). The forms of Ogoh-ogoh represent the Bhuta-Kala (Bhuta: eternal energy, Kala: eternal time), according to Hindu teachings. The imperceptible potentials of nature cannot be thoroughly explored by anyone. Philosophically, civilized men are required to manage the natural resources without damaging the environment itself.
